T he gate slid quickly open when Kyle punched in the code. The fresh smell of the ocean swirled into the car as he leaned back in, so he kept the window down while he made his way up the white gravel driveway, getting the first glimpse of the house that would be his for the next two weeks.

There was something instantly familiar about it, though he knew he ’ d never seen it before. It was two stories, and it wasn ’ t gaudy and oversized like most Los Angeles beachfront homes. It was probably only two thousand square feet, which left lots of room for the lush landscaping that surrounded the property. There were layers of familiar-looking shrubs around the edges, tall enough to block out any street noise, but not heavy and overbearing. In fact, the plants used made the property look like it was placed on a private Hawaiian island, rather than in a busy beach town in southern California.

Kyle parked near the front entrance instead of going over to the garage. The double front doors were old-looking, intricately carved and painted a dusky sort of sea green. They were unlocked, per the information they had gotten from the owner, but he had been told he would find a set of house keys inside.

A main entryway led to a great room with a kitchen off to the left, which had a line of floor-to-ceiling windows that Kyle knew could all be opened in a variety of ways. Opened a little for a bit of sea breeze, opened in full to walk in or out, or even stacked to one side to blend the indoor and outdoor space seamlessly.

And outside those doors, just beyond an outdoor living room, was the pool.

Kyle hurried out for a better look, stopping suddenly in his tracks as he took it all in.

It was Olympic length at fifty meters, but only half the width with five lanes. The pool was perfect for training, with starting blocks, floating lane lines, tiled pool lines, and touch sensors on each end that connected to the flatscreen TV in the outdoor living area, which was currently set to scoreboard mode.

He didn ’ t even need to see the rest of the house. It was absolutely flawless. It was precisely the setup he would have designed himself.

The perfection didn’t end there. Pristine grass stretched outward from the living space and the pool, ending in a cliff’s edge. Beyond that was an unobstructed panoramic view of the Pacific. A privacy gate a few steps down from the edge promised direct access to the beach. Kyle followed the sound of the waves to the edge of the yard, taking in the view—the powdery sand below, the size and frequency of the swells. He found himself itching for a board even though the knew he’d have to wait for his Olympic races to be over.

He needed this, he realized. Needed his ocean mere yards away. Needed its comforting sound, its healing scent, its grounding presence.
